Lula E. Brock, age 96, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mt. Carroll. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oakhill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. A visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., on Monday, May 22, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home with an Eastern Star service being held at 4:30 p.m., prior to the visitation at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church or the Mt. Carroll Community Foundation in Lula’s memory.
Lula was born at home on December 1, 1920, the daughter of Harl and Mabel (Engelking) Johnston in Freedom Township, Carroll County. She attended Mt. Carroll High School, graduating with the Class of 1938. After high school, Lula attended Northern Illinois University for two years. Lula married Elmer L. Brock on May 24, 1942 in Lanark, Illinois. Elmer died on March 1, 1980 in Savanna.
After she was married, Lula was a homemaker and treasured caring for her family. She later decided to finish college and completed her Bachelor Degree in Education in 1961. Lula was an elementary school teacher for several years and taught school for twenty-one years at the Empire School in Freeport, Illinois. Lula was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church and was a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the N.E.A, Illinois Retired Teachers, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Lula enjoyed travel, playing bridge, working crosswords and her lunch group at Charlie’s II.
Lula will be dearly missed by her son, Thomas (Patricia) Brock of Wichita, Kansas; two granddaughters, Amy (Morgan) Green of Santa Barbara, CA, and Amanda Brock of Champaign, Illinois; one great granddaughter, Emily Green; two nephews, Ralph Wayne Getz and Lionel Getz; and niece, Evelyn Leonhardt. Lula was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer and two stepbrothers, Gene and Paul Smiley.
