Joyce M. Wickler — December 31, 1933 – November 10, 2018
Joyce M. Wickler, 84, of Stockton, IL, passed away with family by her side on Saturday November 10, 2018, at Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna, IL. She was born December 31, 1933, the daughter of the late Ralph and Leona (Bausman) Luke Sr. Joyce graduated from Stockton High School in 1951 and married Allen Wickler on March 14, 1952.
Joyce was born during the Great Depression, the youngest of seven children. She developed a strong work ethic and learned to be self-reliant. She was kind and self-sacrificing. Throughout her life she had a bright and lively mind; Alzheimer’s disease gradually took that from her. Married at eighteen and having six children before she was 25 – and losing one of those, Joyce’s life changed quickly. Her self-reliance and work ethic were essential traits. Especially during the first six years of marriage, if something needed doing Joyce would probably be the one to feed it, diaper it, plant it, grow it, can it, pluck it, cook it, sew it, paint it, upholster it, fix it, or clean it.
Later in life she characterized these early years as “trudging through the snow, pregnant, carrying a baby in one arm, holding another on my hip, with another toddling behind, while Allen warmed up the car”. As the family matured, Joyce would make more time to enjoy her extended family, to read (especially novels of the American West), was a sharp card player, and loved flower gardening. The yard at her Stockton house was filled with color; townspeople would take visitors for walks down the alley adjacent to the house to enjoy Joyce’s gardens.
She is survived by sons, William (Carly) of Hanover, Michael (Mary Ann) of Pewaukee, WI, David of Stockton, and Andrew (Lori) of Stockton, daughter Joy of Stockton, grandchildren: Isaac, Ariane, Allison, Christopher, Caroline, Dale, Curtis and Aaron; great-grandchildren: Ivan, Jimi, Eloise, Devin, Kara, Leah, Kiley and Maddox. Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Allen, an infant daughter Jean, and her five brothers: Jack, Ralph Jr., Don, Bob and Dick, and infant sister Dorothy.
Visitation will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Stockton from 4 to 6:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2018, with a memorial service immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in Joyce’s name to the Galena Workshop, 706 S West St., PO Box 6087, Galena, IL 61036-6087.
