Shannon Village Board Votes on School Resource Officer Contract

SHANNON — Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m., the Shannon Village Board met to discuss a contract to hire two part-time School Resource Officers (SROs). The contract had previously been approved by the Eastland School Board and Lanark City Council, and only had to be adopted by the Shannon Village Board. The contract outlines the pay for these officers, as well as duties and responsibilities for the schools, the municipalities, and the officers, themselves. Illinois Unemployment Rate Unchanged – Matches Record Low

September Payrolls Up in Most Industry Groups CHICAGO–The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today that the unemployment rate held at 4.1 percent in September and nonfarm payrolls increased by +2,800 jobs over-the-month, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. The August job losses were revised upward from the preliminary report (from -5,200 jobs to -3,100 jobs). Six Champaign-Urbana Residents Diagnosed with Legionnaires’ Disease

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports that six Illinois residents from Champaign County have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease since September 15, 2018.  Additional information about the residents, including their medical condition, is not available. Several locations are being investigated, including the First Christian Church, where patients may have participated in wedding activities. Legionella bacteria occur naturally in the environment.  Water containing Legionella bacteria can be aerosolized through cooling towers, showers, hot tubs, and decorative fountains, and can cause illness when inhaled.  Approximately 300 cases of Legionnaires’ disease are reported across Illinois each year.  It...

Unknown Soldier Returns to Family in Illinois

A Marine buried as an unknown soldier in Hawaii will soon be reunited with his Chicago-area family. 75 years ago, Marine Corp Tech. Sgt. Harry Carlsen of Brookfield, Illinois, was 31 years old when he was killed as he stormed a Japanese stronghold in the Tarawa Atoll of the Gilbert Islands. DNA tests stemming from a 2008 DNA donation by a niece of Carlsen helped confirm Carlsen’s remains. That niece passed away in 2012.
