Charlene E. Huso — August 28, 1921 – January 10, 2019
Charlene E. Huso, age 97 of Stockton, IL, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019, at Liberty Village in Freeport. She was born August 28, 1921, in Stockton to the late James Sr. and Alice (Stephenson) Baber. Charlene married B.T. (Doc) Huso on January 5, 1944, in Stockton. Doc passed away on August 31, 1972.
Charlene graduated from Stockton High School in 1939 and furthered her education at Iowa State Teachers College, now known as University of Northern Iowa, graduating in 1943. She briefly taught in Aurora, IL, before beginning her career in the Stockton school system. Even though she retired in 1990, she continued to substitute teach and volunteer as a tutor for the next 20 years.
Charlene was very involved in the community. She was president of the Stockton Township Library Board for over 50 years, was on the Jo Daviess County Board of Health, one of the founding members of the Stockton Heritage League, and an original board member of the Stockton Education Foundation. She was also a member of Calvary UMC of Stockton, Eastern Star, Wa-Tan-Ye, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Charlene loved to read, travel, take care of her animals, and attend Stockton sporting events. She was a member of the Northwest Illinois Sports Hall of Fame, elected in 1989.
She is survived by her daughter, Debra Huso of Stockton; her nephews, Rick Baber, Greg (Lynn) Baber, Todd (Kim) Baber, and Andy (Jodie) Baber; her niece, Sally (Tom) Priola; 10 great nieces and nephews; and 2 great-great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, B.T. (Doc) Huso, and her brother and sister-in-law, James and Judy Baber.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019, at 3:30 p.m. at the Hermann Funeral Home in Stockton. There will be a visitation before the service beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will take place at Ladies Union Cemetery in Stockton. A memorial fund has been established for the Stockton Township Library and the Stockton Education Foundation.
