LANARK – Jingle Fest visitors were blessed with a sunny, warm Saturday,  Nov. 26. Festivities included a craft and vendor fair that showcased more than a dozen crafters and vendors at The Heritage Center. Virgil J. Swalve — 1934 – November 22, 2017 Virgil J. Swalve, life-long farmer, auctioneer, real estate broker, and community leader, died Wednesday, November 22 at Liberty Village Manor under Hospice Care after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Damaris (Windle) Swalve of Forreston; daughter Amy Rasing, her husband Dan, and sons, Joshua (Madison, WI) and Tyler (Springfield, IL); daughter Peggy Swalve (Lignon, VA) and six grand-dogs who will miss sitting on his lap in the recliner when he visited; a sister Carol Fluegel (Lena, IL); sisters-in-law Lorraine Swalve (Forreston, IL) and Phyllis Windle (College Park, MD); brother-in-law Darrell Windle (Chicago, IL); and numerous nieces and nephews. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents John J. and BerDena (Daniels) Swalve; in-laws George and Florence Windle; brother Lowell Swalve; and brother-in-law Gene Fluegel. Born in 1934, Virgil graduated from Forreston High School in 1952 and Reisch Auction School in 1973. Roberta was born on October 24, 1954 in Dixon to Robert Carson and Anna Rose (Huffstutler) Davis. She married David Cummingson June 9, 1973 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Rock Falls. She worked at Morrison Community Hospital as a human resource assistant for 16 years. Roberta enjoyed the outdoors especially boating on the river, camping and fishing. She loved her family and enjoyed living in the country. Her family and friends were especially fond of her good cooking. Surviving is her husband, David, of Chadwick; her daughters, Carrie (Michael) Stahl of Milledgeville and Christi (Brett) Ryan of Chadwick; her parents Robert and Anna Davis of Rock Falls; a sister Kim (Jim) Hatten of Rock Falls; and six grandchildren. She was born on July 4, 1954 in Madison, Wisc. to Chester and Joyce (Fey) Strehlow. She married William Wolf on December 9, 1972 at Milledgeville Brethren Church in Milledgeville. Ruth was a custodian with Milledgeville-Chadwick School System for 23 years. She had previously been employed with Franz Manufacturing for 10 years. Ruth enjoyed the outdoors, flowers and working in her yard. She loved to decorate for any holiday, attending horse shows, her grandchildren’s sporting events and camping with her husband Bill. In her leisure time she liked to sit by the pool. Her children and grandchildren meant the world to her and she supported them every chance she had. She and Troy had a very special bond. The smiles and laughs when one would enter a room will always be remembered. Elaine E. Gallentine, 51 yrs. old, of Lanark peacefully joined our Lord on Sun. Nov. 12, 2017. She was born Aug. 22, 1966 in Freeport, IL daughter of Dick and Janet (Diffenderfer) Gruhn. She was a 1984 graduate of Lanark High School. On April 26, 1997, Elaine married the love of her life Jeffrey Gallentine in Lanark. She was an EMT for Mt. Carroll ambulance and the Lanark fire department for about 18 years. She graduated from Nursing school in 2006 and was employed at FHN for 20 years. Elaine enjoyed caring for her patients and they appreciated the love and care she showed. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, playing cards, making crafts, and going to her children’s activities. She was a member of the Lanark First Brethren Church and a volunteer for Workcation. Austin Todd Shellhause

Austin Todd Shellhause, age 25, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin and Lanark, Illinois lived life to the fullest, sharing his “go-getter” spirit with friends and family.  Whenever he was around, life was fun and full of energy.  Austin died Tuesday, October 31, 2017 as the result of a vehicle accident while working near Cuba City.  A funeral service will be held with Masonic Rites at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Eastland High School, Lanark, Illinois.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Eastland High School.  Burial will be in the Schreiner Cemetery, Brookville.  A memorial fund has been established in Austin’s memory.  Friends are invited to share in Austin’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com. Norbert Jakobs

Norbert Jakobs, 91, died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, surrounded by his loved ones. Norbert was born in Oldenburg, Germany on December 9, 1925. Norbert his parents, Samuel and Resy and brothers, Manfred and Dolf moved to Nymegen Holland in 1938. After being in hiding for nearly three years during the Nazi occupation he immigrated to the United States in 1947.  Norbert worked on various farms in New York and Forreston, IL, before deciding to go off on his own. In 1950 he bought his first pasture outside of Coleta, which was the beginning of Jakobs Brothers Farms. While at a sale barn in Madison, Wisconsin, Norbert met a fellow cattle dealer by the name of Nathan (Nikko) DeLevie. Nikko invited Norbert to his home where he was introduced to his daughter, Edith DeLevie. On May 25, 1951 they were married. Shortly after, Norbert enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably in the Korean War. Upon his return he joined in business with his brothers and continued farming and buying cattle until 2015. He was a member of Temple Shalom, Sterling. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Edith DeLevie Jakobs of Sterling; his children, David (Margo), Sandra, Timothy (Stefanie) and Patricia Kaplan (Alan); nine grandchildren, Nikolas (Katie), Alexander, and Bryce Jakobs, Aaron and Alexis Kaplan, Hannah Jakobs, Sasha and Dmitry Jakobs; two...

Paul G. Kallemeyn, age 74, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Monday, October 30, 2017, at his home. A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will take place in Spring Lake Cemetery, Savanna, with military rites conducted by Savanna VFW Post #2223. A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017, at the funeral home prior to the service. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Savanna V.F.W. in Paul’s memory. Family and friends are invited to share in Paul’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com. Paul was born March 15, 1943, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of George and Lucille (Dirks) Kallemeyn. Paul proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964, where he was commended for his support during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the fall of 1962. He attended Savanna High School and earned his GED while enlisted in the United States Navy. On April 8, 1967, he married Helen Louise Snow in Savanna, and they recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Paul worked at the Savanna Army Depot, working his way up to Maintenance Foreman before retiring in 1993. He was a former member of the Savanna Presbyterian Church.
