One Dead in Single Motorcycle Accident

RiverReader.org Staff On Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at approximately 5:57 a.m. Carroll County Deputies came upon a one vehicle accident on Rt. 78 just south of Elizabeth Rd. The crash involved a motorcycle traveling northbound that left the roadway and struck a drainage culvert, causing the driver to be ejected from the motorcycle. The driver was transported by Mt. Carroll Ambulance to FHN Hospital in Freeport, IL and was later transferred to MercyHealth Hospital in Rockford, IL where he was pronounced dead. The crash remains under investigation by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, and the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office....

Henry W. Evans — October 06, 1935 – August 23, 2017 HENRY W. EVANS, 81, of Thomson, IL, died Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, IL. Henry was born October 6, 1935 in Clinton, IA, to Wilbert and Ruth (Schmidt) Evans. He was educated in the Clinton schools. On May 29, 1971 he married Ruth E. Kleppe in Morrison, IL. Henry was employed by Champion Dairy-Pak in Clinton for 47 years, retiring in 2000. He attended the Thomson United Methodist Church, was a Campground Volunteer for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Thomson Causeway and enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, vacationing, and spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; two daughters, Beth (Brian) Balk of Thomson, IL and Joyce (Mark) McNeill of Rushford, MN; six grandchildren, Courtney Balk, Brady Balk, Ian McNeill, Ayla McNeill, Andrew McNeill and Ryan McNeill; one brother, Donald (Cheryl) Evans of Las Vegas, NV; numerous nieces and nephews and a special family friend, Hattie Richman. Geoffrey R. Sweet — December 6, 1944 – August 21, 2017 Geoffrey R. Sweet, 72, of Lake Carroll, IL passed away on August 21, 2017 at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Beloit, WI on December 6, 1944 to Fred & Dorothy Myers Sweet. He graduated from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI, served in the Navy aboard the US Kitty Hawk and then attended UW Platteville, graduating with a degree in Industrial Technology. He then worked for Honeywell for over 30 years where he met his wife, Linda. He loved sailing, flying and driving his Corvette with friends. He was a generous and kind person, and loved his log home at Lake Carroll which he helped build. He also loved his pets and enjoyed watching the wildlife. He is survived by his loving wife Linda Sweet, two stepchildren, Randy (Leslie Austin) Holland, of Beloit, WI, Michelle (Tim) Sager, of Waverly, IA, and five grandchildren, Alyssa (Luke) Weber of Cedar Rapids, IA, Mya Holland of Clermont, FL, Andrew (Maddi) Sager of Waterloo, IA, Gabrielle and Bailey Sager of Waverly, IA and two great grandchildren Liam and Brinley of Waterloo, IA and expected babies, grandson baby Weber and baby Sager, and, stepsisters, Susan Sennett of Atlanta, GA and Marianna Porter of Beloit, WI. Charges Filed Against Former Lanark Veterinarian BY TOM KOCAL TKocal@RiverReader.org 815-493-3065 LANARK — The sound of gunshots in the 500 block of East Locust St. in Lanark near the lift station Saturday morning, Aug. 19, prompted a 9-1-1 call. When police responded, four dead wild turkeys were discovered. Because the incident involved the shooting of game/protected animals, Lanark Police Chief Matt Magill said the investigation was turned over to Illinois Conservation Police, who took into custody Arman Stover, 77, of rural Lanark.
