Newly-elected Eastland Board of Education board members sworn in

RiverReader.org staff   LANARK — Retiring Board President Bill Woessner called to order his last meeting—the Special Meeting of the Eastland School Board on April 26. Secretary Jen Sturtevant read aloud the results of the April 4 elections for seats on the Board of Education; the top three vote-getters were incumbents Jen Sturtevant, newcomer Anthony Preston and incumbent Steve Snider; they were declared newly elected. Superintendent Mark Hansen administered the oath of office and new member Preston took his seat at the table. President Woessner was recognized for his 12 years of service on the Board. Hansen thanked him personally and on behalf of the staff, students and communities. Bill spoke briefly about the pride he feels for Eastland and encouraged those present to keep progressing and moving forward. During the reorganization process, nominations for the office of President,  Vice-President and Secretary were made. Lorrie Heeren will serve as president; vice-president is Diann Cassens; and Jen Sturtevant was re-elected secretary. All three positions are for 2-year terms. With the new board in place, members approved all contracts in force and the regular meeting dates for the remainder of the fiscal year were established. The board will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 15 and Wednesday, June 21 in the EJSHS District Office in Lanark. The board also approved revised committee assignments. County fair preparation for 4-H’ers at StephCo Animal Swap and Clinics

BY LYNNETTE FORTH For RiverReader.org FREEPORT — The Stephenson County Fairgrounds hosted a small animal swap and poultry and rabbit clinics on Saturday,  April 22. The clinics focused on preparing 4-H’ers for showing animals at the fair. Rita Koch of Dakota presented the poultry clinic, explaining proper washing procedures for poultry, nail trimming, proper carrying techniques, checking for disease and illness, and what to expect when being judged at the fair. SPIN Club Leader Cortnea Wynia and her daughters gave a hands-on presentation to the 4-H Kids Club and brought a selection of their many bunnies to share with the group.
